Bottlenose dolphin - Grand dauphin

While sailing from Brest to Le Havre on the pilot cutter Marie-Fernand, as we were approaching Guernsey, a bottlenose dolphin showed up, swimming and splashing along the boat.

We welcomed it with whooping, tapping on the hull of the ship, and trying to take pictures as it was swimming around the boat. It stayed with us for more than 2 hours, and I had great fun watching it effortlessly gliding along and ahead of us.

After a while it settled on a pattern: swimming below the bow wave of the ship, probably taking advantage of it to save energy (or for having great surfing fun), then coming out of the water along the stem of the ship to breathe quickly. It probably was also on its way to Guernsey, and “shippooled” with us.
