Bergère de Domrémy in the Goulet

Bergère de Domrémy dans le Goulet

Mengant rock - Rocher du Mengant

On a very beautiful summer day, we sailed Bergère de Domrémy to Camaret. In the morning there was very little wind, so we used the boat’s two big oars to scuttle for about 2 kms. It’s impressive to scuttle a 10 tons ship, but it works, taking turns.
Camaret is outside the harbour, so we went through the Goulet (narrows), passing along the Mengant rock. It is right in the middle of the narrows, barely emerging, and was very dangerous before a light was built upon it. It’s a very popular spot for divers, full of life, if you take care to use the rock as shelter against the very strong current.

We went along the Cornouaille battery, a long defence fort just above water level on the southern shore.

Our friends of the Saint Guénolé, another heritage-listed scallops dredging sloop, were kind enough to tow us for a while. We don’t have an engine onboard, but they do (their ship is 12 years younger).

Sainte Christine & Mari-Lizig

When we arrived in Camaret, we met two other old gaffers: Sainte Christine from Camaret towing Mari-Lizig from Le Relecq-Kerhuon.
