The Eckmühl lighthouse has a strange saxon name for a lighthouse in Brittany. The name comes from the father of a childless parisian baroness who willed money for “the construction of a lighthouse on a dangerous spot of the coast of France”. Her father, the prince of Eckmühl, had ancestry in the town of Eggmühl, in south Bavaria, but misspellings happen… The lighthouse was built between 1893 and 1897.
Le phare d’Eckmühl a un étrange nom saxon pour un phare de Bretagne. Le nom vient d’une baronne parisienne sans descendance, qui légua de l’argent pour “la construction d’un phare sur un point dangereux des côtes de France”. Son père, le prince d’Eckmühl, avait des ancêtres dans la ville d’Eggmühl, en Bavière du sud, mais nul n’est à l’abri des fautes d’orthographe… Le phare a été construit entre 1893 et 1897.
