Chapelle de Tromenec
The Tromenec chapel in Landéda is the only remnant of the Tromenec manor (along with a well-hidden dovecote). It’s a small grey granite building dating from the 15th century.
La chapelle de Tromenec à Landéda est le seul bâtiment restant du manoir de Tromenec (avec un pigeonnier bien caché). C’est un petit bâtiment de granit gris datant du XVe siècle.
Its small rose window is pretty nice, the rest of the inside of the building is basic.
Sa petite rosace est assez jolie, le reste de l’intérieur du bâtiment est basique.
The two effigies inside the chapel tell an interesting story. The big one in the center (above) is the tomb of François de Kermavan, killed by Guillaume Simon de Tromenec, who lies in the smaller tomb beside.
Tromenec was a rambunctious character who, after fighting in the religion wars, took to the habit of pillaging catholic properties in the area. He once raided the property of the Léon bishop, who sent one of his feudatories, François de Kermavan, to avenge him.
Kermavan called for a duel, but Tromenec had such a war experience that he took no time dispatching the young man. The bishop was not happy and excommunicated Tromenec. This “very harsh punishment” was unbearable for Tromenec, who repented of his sins. The condition for his forgiveness was that he would atone for the killing by building a monument dedicated to Kermavan in his chapel.
Les deux gisants dans la chapelle rappellent une histoire intéressante. Le grand au centre (ci-dessus) est la tombe de François de Kermavan, tué par Guillaume Simon de Tromenec, qui repose dans la plus petite tombe à côté.
Tromenec était un personnage plutôt turbulent qui, après avoir combattu lors des guerres de religion, prit l’habitude de piller les propriétés catholiques des environs. Une fois, il fit un raid sur une propriété de l’évêque du Léon, qui envoya un de ses vassaux, François de Kermavan, pour le venger.
Kermavan défia Tromenec en duel, mais Tromenec avait une telle expérience de la guerre qu’il tua le jeune homme très rapidement. Cela ne plut pas trop à l’évêque qui excommunia Tromenec. Cette « punition très dure » fut insupportable à Tromenec, qui se repentit. La condition de son pardon fut qu’il devait faire pénitence en créant un monument dédié à Kermavan dans sa chapelle.
The coat of arms of the Tromenec family is a lion and features at the foot of Kermavan’s effigy as an hommage.

While walking around the chapel, I noticed what I will call a red grasshopper on a tree stump. It’s quite beautiful, I’d never seen such a colour in a grasshopper.
En marchant autour de la chapelle, j’ai remarqué ce que je vais appeler un criquet rouge sur une souche d’arbre. Il est assez beau, je n’avais jamais vu cette couleur de criquet.
