We were lucky to spend a day sailing on the sinagots in the Morbihan gulf, thanks to the Les amis du sinagot association. They are a thriving group, and now manage 3 boats moored in Séné.
Above, Les Trois Frères (the three brothers) with its blue band is an original, heritage-listed boat, built in 1943.
Below, with a red band, is Mab Er Guip, a replica built in 1985 in the Guip shipyard, based on a boat called Le vainqueur des jaloux (the winner over jealous people).

Nous avons eu la chance de passer une journée de navigation sur les sinagots dans le golfe du Morbihan, grâce à l’association Les amis du sinagot. C’est un groupe très dynamique, qui gère 3 bateaux mouillés à Séné.
Ci-dessus, Les Trois Frères avec sa bande bleue est un bateau d’origine, classé monument historique, construit en 1943.
Ci-dessous, avec la bande rouge, c’est Mab Er Guip, une réplique construite en 1985 au chantier du Guip, basé sur un bateau nommé Le vainqueur des jaloux.

Named after the people from the town of Séné, the sinagots have two masts, fitted with lugsails. The masts are quite high to catch regular wind when sailing among the numerous islands of the gulf. Their hull is not too wide to get good performance and beat the very strong currents of the gulf. Normally their sails are of a reddish colour, obtained by tanning with tallow and pine bark. A heart-shaped fastener piece at the bottom of the mast is where you tied the halyard after hoisting the sails.

Nommés comme les habitants de la ville de Séné, les sinagots on deux mâts, avec des voiles au tiers. Les mâts sont assez hauts pour profiter de vents plus réguliers quand ils naviguent entre les nombreuses îles du golfe. Leur coque est de forme assez fine pour avoir une bonne performance et battre les courants très forts du golfe. Normalement les voiles sont de couleur ocre, obtenue par tannage avec du suif et de l’écorce de pin. Une pièce d’attache en forme de cœur sert à frapper la drisse après avoir hissé les voiles.

On Les Trois Frères, a cup holder is inscribed with a “prayer to the Monk”. The Monk is a rock close to Séné harbour, and the prayer invites you to drink a cup to the monk. (“As you pass the Monk you have to salute with a drink of white wine without breathing. Good wind, fair sea and nice current will carry you assuredly”).
On the sails, the Daniel sailmaker emblem is a stoat with a scarf, I like this logo.

Sur Les Trois Frères, un porte-gobelet est gravé avec une « prière au Moine ». Le Moine est un rocher proche du port de Séné, et la prière vous invite à boire un verre à la santé du moine. (« Doublant le Moine il faut saluer d’un coup de blanc sans respirer. Bon vent, belle mer et bon courant te porteront assurément »).
Sur les voiles, la voilerie Daniel a mis son emblème, une hermine avec une écharpe, j’aime bien ce logo.
