Eiffel tower & Alexandre III bridge

Tour Eiffel & pont Alexandre III

Eiffel tower - Tour Eiffel

Before crossing the Alexandre III bridge, I got a view of the Eiffel tower further away along the Seine river, framed between an obelisk and a lion sculpture. These sculptures are among the extravagant decorative features of the bridge.

On closer inspection, I was attracted to the lion figure. I find it looks very sad, knowing very well it’s being paraded with that annoying smiling child and garlands, but there’s nothing to do about it, and it retains its majesty under a frowning brow. The sculptor was Georges Gardet.

After crossing, the lion and obelisk can be seen on the left, at the bottom of the column with the winged golden sculpture on top (this column is one of the counterweights for the bridge). Behind it on the left is the Grand Palais exhibition hall.
Built at the same time as the Eiffel tower, the bridge includes very ornate lighting and gold-plated sculptures. Where the tower proudly shows its naked steel structure, the bridge is entirely made of steel, but it is moulded and painted to make it look like stone. I like the “truthfulness” of the tower better.
