Race of Alderney

Raz Blanchard

Alderney island - Île d’Aurigny

The island of Alderney is the northernmost of the channel islands. It is situated opposite the La Hague cape in northern Cotentin, and the space between the cape and the island is called the Race of Alderney. The currents there are among the fastest tidal races in Europe, reaching 12 knots during spring tides.

Race of Alderney - Raz Blanchard

This race is impassable for most sailing ships against the tide, and the sea can get very bad if even a moderate breeze blows against the current. We were lucky to cross it on a very quiet and sunny day, having chosen our time of departure according to the timing of the tide. With the help of the current, we reached 9 knots.

One of the features of this race is the presence of vortexes, created by irregularities at the bottom of the sea (an average of 40 m deep). Called “marmites” by the locals, they are much flatter than the surrounding sea, looking like oiled patches in this quiet weather.
