Raz de Sein
The Raz de Sein is the rather narrow stretch of water between the Pointe du Raz on land (above) and the island of Sein (on the horizon below). You have to go through it to go from the Atlantic ocean to the Iroise sea, or else go further west 30 miles to avoid treacherous reefs around the island. The currents are very strong and if they are not in the same direction as the wind, very high waves form, so you also have to cross around slack water to get as little current as possible. Hence the very early start.
Le Raz de Sein est un passage assez étroit entre la Pointe du Raz (ci-dessus) et l’île de Sein (sur l’horizon ci-dessous). On doit le traverser pour aller de l’océan Atlantique à la mer d’Iroise, ou faire un détour de plus de 30 milles pour éviter les récifs traîtres autour de l’île. Les courants sont très forts et s’ils ne sont pas orientés comme le vent, de très grosses vagues se forment, donc on doit aussi passer autour de l’étale pour avoir le moins de courant possible. D’où le départ très matinal.
The Vieille lighthouse (right) and the tourelle de la Plate mark the edge of the danger zone on land side. The steel railing of the balcony on top of the lighthouse is rusty and its colour fades as a gradient on the facade of the building.
Le phare de la Vieille (à droite) et la tourelle de la Plate marquent le bord de la zone dangereuse du côté de la terre. La rambarde en acier du balcon du phare a rouillé, et sa couleur déteint en dégradé sur la façade du bâtiment.
We leave a safe distance before we turn north into the Iroise sea. Behind the lighthouse and tower, the baie des Trépassés (bay of the deceased) is a gloomy bay where the sea can get wild, but also a surf spot of course.
Nous laissons une bonne distance avant de tourner nord pour entrer en mer d’Iroise. Derrière le phare et la tour, la baie des Trépassés est une baie ténébreuse où la mer peut se déchaîner mais aussi, bien sûr, un spot de surf.
Further north the Tévennec lighthouse marks the end of the Raz de Sein zone. It had a reputation for making its keepers crazy when it was manned. Easy to understand when you know that at first, one man was supposed to stay one year on this hollow rock atop a cave that the sea violently fills with water, emitting ululating sounds from vents in the process.
Plus au nord le phare de Tévennec marque la fin de la zone du Raz de Sein. Il avait la réputation de rendre ses gardiens fous quand il était habité. C’est facile à comprendre quand on sait qu’un homme devait rester un an sur ce rocher creux posé sur une grotte que la mer remplit violemment d’eau, émettant des sons hululants sortant d’évents du rocher.
